The Newfield Democratic Committee is at the center of all Democratic election activities. Volunteers are its heart and soul.
Election season is our busiest time, stretching from June to November, when all our volunteers do the critical work that gets out the vote that elects our candidates in local Town, County, State and Federal contests. What we do is straight forward and significant.
We do many things:
Identify candidates for office
Ask fellow Democrats for petition signatures to nominate our candidates
Organize special events to introduce our candidates
Have mailing bees & distribute literature
Do friendly phone banking to our neighbors to remember to vote
Place campaign signs on lawns of willing neighbors
Poll watch on election day and…
Enjoy ourselves.
Throughout the year we count on each other and our neighbors to keep informed on local, state and national issues. We research topics, identify growing concerns on the local level, and advocate for our positions to elected officials on the issues that are important to us. We’re democracy (citizens) in action.
An example of a recent success was the adoption of a law to ban high-volume hydro-fracking in the town and earlier the adoption of the town comprehensive plan. These were accomplished over several years through sustained and informed advocacy and four elections cycles growing our presence on the Town Board to a majority voting impact. Our strategy was solid and effective over the long haul.
